Okay, so here's a story. Last Fourth of July, I was scrambling. Company was coming, the grill was… well, let's just say it tried its best, and I needed a dessert. Fast. That's when the idea for these Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Mini Donuts was born. They're cute, they're festive, and best of all, they're SO easy to make. Like, ridiculously easy. Even if your grill bursts into flames—hypothetically, of course—you can still whip these up and save the day. These mini donuts are not only perfect for the Fourth of July but also Memorial Day, Flag Day, or any occasion where you want to show off your American pride. Plus, who can resist a mini donut? They're like bite-sized bundles of happiness, especially when they're decked out in patriotic colors.

What I love most about this recipe is how customizable it is. Don't have a mini donut maker? No problem! You can bake these in a mini muffin tin. Just adjust the baking time accordingly. Not a fan of vanilla glaze? Try a chocolate glaze or a simple dusting of powdered sugar. And the sprinkles? Oh, the possibilities! Red, white, and blue, of course, but you can also use sanding sugar, edible glitter, or even tiny candy stars. The point is, have fun with it! Get the kids involved and make it a family activity. After all, cooking should be about creating memories, not just following a recipe. Also, I think I may have slightly burnt my first batch, I forgot about the recipe in favor of watching some fireworks.

📖 Instructions

  1. Plug in your mini donut maker and let it heat up. It usually takes just a few minutes. A little light will tell you when it’s ready, but yours might be different, so check the instructions.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Make sure there aren't any lumps! Nobody wants lumpy donuts, right?
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Get it nice and combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk until just combined. Don't overmix! Overmixing leads to tough donuts, and we want light and fluffy ones.
  5. Spoon the batter into a piping bag or a zip-top bag. If using a zip-top bag, snip off one of the corners.
  6. Once the donut maker is heated, pipe the batter into the wells, filling them about two-thirds full. Don't overfill, or you'll have donut overflow… messsy
  7. Close the lid and let the donuts cook for 2-3 minutes, or until they're golden brown. Cooking times will vary depending on your donut maker, so keep an eye on them!
  8. Carefully remove the donuts with a small, non-metal spatula or a fork. Metal can scratch the surface of your donut maker.
  9. Place the donuts on a cooling rack to cool slightly. While they're cooling, prepare the glazes.
  10. For the white glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. If it's too thick, add a little more milk. If it's too thin, add a little more powdered sugar.
  11. Divide the remaining glaze into two bowls. In one bowl, add red food coloring until you reach your desired shade of red. In the other bowl, add blue food coloring until you reach your desired shade of blue.
  12. Dip the tops of the donuts into the glazes, then place them back on the cooling rack to let the glaze set.
  13. While the glaze is still wet, sprinkle the donuts with red, white, and blue sprinkles. Now they REALLY look patriotic!
  14. Let the glaze set completely before serving. This usually takes about 15-20 minutes. If you want them to set faster, you can pop them in the fridge for a few minutes.

📝 Notes

  • Don't overmix the batter! It's better to have a few lumps than to overmix.
  • Cooking times may vary depending on your mini donut maker.
  • Store leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature.
