buying guide: the best notebooks for serious note takers

“The faintest ink is better than the best memory.” – Chinese Proverb. I've always been a firm believer in the power of the written word. There's something uniquely satisfying about putting pen to paper, capturing thoughts, ideas, and to-do lists in a tangible form. For years, I hopped from notebook to notebook, never quite finding 'the one.' Sound familiar? That endless quest for the perfect notebook? One time, I was so desperate, I even tried using a digital note-taking app... lasted about a week. It just wasn't the same. I missed the feel of paper between my fingers. That’s what led me on this quest for the ultimate note-taking companion. And trust me, I've learned a thing or two along the way.

Why the Right Notebook Matters: More Than Just Paper

Okay, so you might be thinking, "It's just a notebook! What's the big deal?" Well, imagine trying to bake a cake with a flimsy pan that warps in the oven. Frustrating, right? The right notebook is the foundation for clear thinking, organized projects, and even sparking creativity. It needs to feel good, to be something you actively want to use. Think about it: Is it the size? Paper quality? Binding? Cover? Every notebook feature matters, but not equally. Some are more relevant depending on your style.

Features to Consider When Choosing Your Notebook

  • Paper Quality: This is huge. Nothing's worse than ink bleeding through the page. Look for notebooks with thicker paper (around 100gsm or higher if you're using fountain pens). Smooth paper is a dream for writing, while textured paper can add a nice tactile feel. One time I got a notebook with paper so rough it was like writing on sandpaper; never again!
  • Binding: Consider spiral-bound (lays flat), perfect-bound (more professional-looking), or disc-bound (customizable!). Spiral is good for those who don’t love leaving their notebooks open, perfect for small desks.
  • Size: Pocket-sized for on-the-go? A5 for everyday use? Or a larger B5 for projects? I'm partial to A5—it's the Goldilocks size for me.
  • Cover Material: Hardcover for durability? Softcover for flexibility? Leather-bound for that touch of luxury? Your cover will protect your notes from the elements, water, etc. Get something that fits your lifestyle!
  • Ruling: Lined, dotted, blank, or grid? Each has its own purpose. I personally love dotted pages for their versatility.

Choosing the right combo can be overwhelming at first, but with a bit of patience, you can get through it! I believe in you!

Notebook Recommendations: Tested and Approved (By Me and Some Friends!)

I've tested a lot of notebooks, so let's get to the good stuff. Here's a few of my top picks – along with notes from my friends:

  • Moleskine Classic Notebook: A classic for a reason. Durable, portable, and the paper is decent (though not the best for fountain pens). A friend of mine swears by these for his daily journaling.
  • Leuchtturm1917: Known for its high-quality paper, numbered pages, and index. Perfect for organizing detailed notes. One thing that happened to me was, I lost my favorite notebook, this is the reason why I always buy the one that comes with numbered pages!
  • Rhodia Webnotebook: Super smooth paper that's a joy to write on. Great for fountain pen users. A little pricier, but worth it.
  • Midori MD Notebook: Simple, minimalist design with incredibly smooth paper. It lays completely flat, which is a huge plus.
  • Five Star Spiral Notebook: Ok, let's be real, these are great for low-budget option. Although, the paper quality is not too good, but they are cheap, so worth it for the price! One of my friend had to use these during college, so she swears by these!

Finding the right notebook it's more of a personal preference than anything, but I'm sure you will find one that you would love!

Beyond the Basics: Finding What Works For You

Choosing the right notebook is a super personal thing. What works for me might not work for you, and that's totally okay. The important thing is to experiment and find what sparks joy. Try different sizes, paper types, and binding styles until you find 'the one' (or maybe a few 'ones' for different purposes!).

My Personal Experience

I started with a simple spiral notebook back in school, but I would always loose the papers, so that wasn't a good choice. But as I got older, I experimented with many different brands, each with its own pros and cons. I tried Moleskine, but the paper quality wasn't to my taste; I used Rhodia webnotebooks, but the price was too high. So in the end, I just stick to Five Star Spiral Notebooks, and even though the paper quality is not the best, I enjoy how cheap they are. The important part of the notebook is how you use it, so be yourself!

The Takeaway:

Don't settle for just any notebook. Invest a little time and thought into finding one that truly inspires you to write, create, and organize. Your perfect notebook is out there – happy hunting! In the meantime, If you're in need for some more options, you can visit Amazon, and you will be surprised with the amount of option that they have!
