Coachella

how to navigate coachella's crowds

So, Coachella. The name alone conjures up images of flower crowns, glitter, and… a sea of humanity. Last year, my friend, Maya, and I went, and let me tell you, navigating those crowds was an adventure! We got separated at least three times, lost our water bottles (twice!), and somehow managed to get sunburned despite slathering on SPF 50. But we also saw some incredible performances, made some hilarious memories, and, ultimately, survived. This year, I'm armed with some serious strategies to conquer the chaos, and I'm sharing them all with you.

Before You Even Think About Stepping Foot in the Desert

  • Plan your outfits: Coachella is a fashion show, but don't let that overwhelm you. Think about comfortable shoes (trust me, your feet will thank you!), layers for fluctuating temperatures (desert nights can get chilly!), and sun protection—hats, sunglasses, the works. I made the mistake of wearing cute but impractical sandals last year—ouch!
  • Download the Coachella app: This thing is your lifeline. It has everything from set times and maps to artist information and even a way to connect with friends. I swear I wouldn't have survived my last Coachella without it.
  • Charge EVERYTHING: Portable chargers are your new best friend. Your phone is your key to communication, navigation, and capturing all those Insta-worthy moments. Don't be the one stranded with a dead phone.

Getting There and Getting Around

  • Transportation is key: Driving is a nightmare; parking is expensive, and finding your car after a long day is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Consider ride-sharing services, shuttle buses, or even biking. My friends and I carpooled last year, and while it wasn't too bad, we could have used the shuttle bus for that extra comfort!
  • Meetup spots: Designate meeting places within the festival grounds. Don't rely on cell service (it can be spotty!), instead think visually: That giant Ferris wheel, the iconic art installation, etc.
  • Stay hydrated: I can’t stress this enough. The desert is unforgiving. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it frequently. Dehydration is no joke, and believe me, you want to make it through all the dancing! And remember to drink water regularly even when you don't feel thirsty

  • Go with the flow: Don't fight the current. If you see a huge crowd heading one way, go with it. Trying to go against the tide is a recipe for disaster (and frustration). Honestly, it’s like swimming against a strong current, and trust me, it’s not fun.
  • Use the app map: The app map is really helpful in figuring out where you are and where you need to be. I remember one set we were trying to make it to–it was completely packed and we still didn't find a way. Next year, I will use the map more properly and follow it.
  • Buddy system: Never wander off alone. Stick with your group and use the app to keep in touch if you need to split up temporarily. Seriously; my best experiences at Coachella all happen when I'm with great friends

Coachella Survival Tips (Because, You Know, Survival)

  • Sunscreen is your friend (and reapply!): I can't say it enough. Reapply every two hours, no matter what. The sun in Indio is intense!
  • Protect your phone: Use a waterproof case if you plan on being near any water features (or if there's a chance of spilled drinks). Trust me, a broken phone at Coachella is not fun.
  • Pack snacks: Festival food can get expensive. Pack some easy-to-carry snacks to keep your energy levels up. I swear by protein bars and trail mix.
  • Be prepared for anything: A tiny first-aid kit with band-aids, pain relievers, and antacids can be a lifesaver. You never know what might happen!
