My Coffee Table Confessions

Let's be honest; my coffee table was looking pretty disastrous lately. Books piled upon each other in a precarious tower, remotes scattered all over the place like fallen soldiers, and an assortment of coasters that look like they've survived some small-scale war. Of course, it wasn't done on purpose—life just happens. But it was starting to make me feel a little chaotic. So I did something about it. And guess what? It wasn't as difficult as I expected! Today I'm sharing with you the new wisdom I gained, plus some styling secrets, because a clutter-free coffee table? It really is a game changer. Trust me.

The purging part: clearing off the coffee table. Before you even think about styling, you've got to get rid of all the junk. Come on. Grab a basket or a box if you're feeling really ambitious and start picking up everything that doesn't belong. I know it may seem like an insurmountable task right now, but trust me: the sense of accomplishment afterward is incredibly rewarding! I couldn't believe how much stuff I cleared out that didn't even add any value to my living room—think remotes you don't use, magazines you've already read, and those random trinkets that seem to multiply overnight. Be ruthless. You won't regret it. One of my friends actually found a missing earring she thought was gone forever during her coffee table purge! Crazy, right?

The Foundation: Choosing a Tray (or Not!)

Now, this is the fun part! A tray saves your behind when it comes to styling a coffee table. Instantly, everything gets a cohesive look. I use a woven tray that adds warmth to our space, but you can try everything from simple wood trays to glam metallic. But here's a little secret: you don't need a tray. If you prefer a more eclectic or less structured look, you can skip the tray entirely. After all, it's your coffee table, and it's your rules. I'll be honest, this was probably the hardest part for me because I was so attached to the idea of a tray. It was only when I accepted the possibility of no tray that I found the most relaxed and elegant solution for me. Don't be a slave to design trends!

The Art of Arrangement: Creating Visual Harmony

Now that you have your base, it's time to create the arrangement. Think visually. I tend to like a variety of heights and textures. A pile of books—preferably those with pretty covers—adds height. A small vase of flowers, fresh or faux—depending on your lifestyle—adds a touch of elegance. A decorative bowl filled with somethings adds personality! Don't be afraid to try things and move things around until you feel good about the way it looks. And honestly, don't be afraid to break the rules! Experiment. Sometimes the most outrageous combinations work out great!

Adding Personality: Bringing in Your Style

That's where you get to infuse your personality! What are your hobbies? What are your passions? I am big on traveling, so you will find a small globe and some snaps from my adventures in my coffee table. A bookworm? Display your favorite books. Coffee aficionado? Display your favorite mug! Make it personal, and let your coffee table reflect you. Don't just go with the trends; create your style of coffee table!

Keeping the Zen: The Clutter-Free End

The key to a consistently stylish coffee table is regular maintenance. Put things back in their places after using them, and do a mini-declutter every now and then. Make it a habit; you don't have to spend hours tidying up. Just take a few minutes each day. Also, having a place for everything—for example, a basket for remotes or a bowl for keys—will prevent future clutter.
