This isn't just about finding a cool design; it's about finding an artist who can bring your vision to life. Scouring Instagram for ideas is great, but don't just pick the flashiest image. Think about the style. Does it fit your aesthetic? Does it feel you? I spent weeks looking for the hummingbird artist. It was an epic hunt. Finally found one who specialized in miniature, hyperrealistic birds, and boy oh boy, was it worth it!

Where you put your tattoo matters. A small piece on your wrist might look cute now, but how will it look in 20 years? I learned this the hard way. A friend of mine got a large tattoo on their thigh that lost its definition because they stretched out after years of going to the gym. Think about areas that don't stretch much or change drastically over time. Also, consider things like sun exposure. Some places are more prone to fading than others. This is an investment, so be smart about it!

This is HUGE. The best tattoo in the world will look like trash if you don't take care of it properly. We're talking about an open wound. Your aftercare is key to healing and preventing infection. If there is anything you should never skimp on, this is it! I messed this up on my first tattoo, and it was the WORST. So, take detailed notes on the instructions your artist provides. Cleanliness is next to godliness, when it comes to tattoos.

Let's be real: good tattoos aren't cheap. There is a big difference between a cheap tattoo and a quality tattoo, that may look great initially. It's better to save up and get a quality tattoo that will last a lifetime from a reputable artist than to rush in and get something you regret. This also includes the aftercare products; you will need to budget for these too. Talk to your artist about pricing upfront and avoid surprises!

This is the most important point. I cannot stress enough how important it is to seriously consider if you really, really want this. A tattoo is a permanent statement. I did a lot of thinking before my first tattoo, and I am still extremely pleased with my choice. A small, simple design is a good first choice. Will you still love this design in ten, twenty, or fifty years? If you have any doubts, wait! There is no pressure. Seriously, don't rush it, especially for your first tattoo. Make sure you are 100% positive about your decision.
Getting a tattoo is a personal journey. Take your time, do your research, and make sure you're fully committed. And if you still have questions, talk to people who have tattoos—it's like an exclusive club, but everyone's more than happy to share their experiences! Now go get inked (responsibly, of course!).
