7 simple steps to a healthier breakfast

A Wake-Up Call

Let's be honest, mornings can be brutal. I used to hit snooze so many times, my alarm clock practically begged for mercy. And my breakfast? Usually a sad, lukewarm cup of coffee and maybe a stale piece of toast if I was feeling ambitious. Sound familiar? I'm guessing for many, a healthy breakfast isn't exactly top of mind when you're battling that 6 am alarm. But trust me, this changed my life, and it can change yours, too. I started small, just one tiny tweak at a time, and pretty soon, breakfast was something I actually looked forward to.

Step 1: Prep the Night Before

This is my biggest game-changer. Seriously. Think about it: You're tired, brain fog is setting in, the last thing you want to do is chop veggies or measure out oats. The night before, I prep everything: chop fruits and veggies, measure out grains, even portion yogurt into containers. This takes maybe 15 minutes and the next morning, breakfast is a breeze. It's like having a tiny victory before the day even starts! I actually tried to set up my breakfast the night before, but I forgot to set the alarm, so that was fun...not!

Step 2: Embrace Overnight Oats

Overnight oats are my absolute lifesaver (after the prep-the-night-before hack, of course!). They're so easy – combine rolled oats, milk (dairy or non-dairy), chia seeds, and your favorite toppings in a jar, and let it sit in the fridge overnight. In the morning, grab it and go! You can get super creative with toppings too. My go-to is berries and a drizzle of honey, but you can add nuts, seeds, chocolate chips—whatever your heart desires. So simple, yet so satisfying.

Step 3: Smoothie Power!

If you're not an oat person (gasp!), smoothies are the way to go. They're quick, customizable, and packed with nutrients. I throw in spinach (you can't even taste it!), frozen fruit, a scoop of protein powder, and some liquid. Blend, and boom—instant breakfast! I once tried adding peanut butter to my smoothie...let's just say it wasn't my finest moment. The texture was...interesting. But experimentation is key to find your perfect smoothie combo.

Step 4: Eggs-cellent Choice!

Eggs are a breakfast superhero—protein-packed and versatile. You can scramble them, poach them, fry them, make an omelet...the options are endless! I love adding veggies to my eggs for an extra nutritional boost. I'm not much of a cook, but even I can manage to scramble some eggs with some cheese. It's a simple way to feel full and energized.

Step 5: Yogurt Parfait Perfection

Yogurt parfaits are another one of my easy go-tos. Layer yogurt (Greek yogurt is my favorite), granola, and fruit in a glass or bowl. It's pretty, it's delicious, and it's a great way to get your probiotics and fiber. Plus, they're super customizable, so get creative and experiment with different flavors and textures. The possibilities are endless!

Step 7: Listen to Your Body

This is the most important step. Forget the rigid rules and diet culture nonsense. Pay attention to what makes you feel good. If you're craving something sweet, have a small piece of fruit. If you need something savory, go for eggs or avocado toast. The goal is to fuel your body with wholesome foods that energize you and set you up for a successful day. What works for me might not work for you, and that's totally okay. The beauty of breakfast is its versatility. And besides, isn’t life too short for boring breakfasts?
