Spring cleaning! Ugh, just the words themselves make me want to crawl back under the covers with a good book and a cup of tea. But, alas, the clocks have sprung forward, and my cluttered apartment is screaming for some attention. And I'm on a budget, which makes it even more challenging. So I'm diving into this spring cleaning adventure armed with a whole load of budget-friendly tips and tricks! Let's get started, shall we? Oh, and did I mention I found a twenty-dollar bill tucked away in my couch cushions? That's practically a bonus cleaning fee!

Decluttering: The First Step (and Maybe the Hardest)

Before you even THINK about grabbing your cleaning supplies, you've gotta declutter. I know, I know, it's the least fun part. But trust me, it's the most important. I tend to keep things 'just in case'—old clothes, shoes I haven't worn in years, etc. So my first step is always ruthless assessment. What do I REALLY need? And what can I get rid off?

  • Donation bins are your friend: I always have a box ready and waiting for donations to a local charity shop. It feels amazing to give things to people who need them.
  • The 3-box method: This has helped me tons. Three boxes: 'Keep,' 'Donate,' and 'Trash.' Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
  • Sell what you can: Got any items in good condition that might make you a little extra cash? Those pre-loved treasures might find a new home on eBay or Facebook Marketplace. Think of it as a bonus for the effort!

Cleaning Supplies: The Budget-Friendly Way

Forget those fancy, expensive cleaning products. A lot of times, they are full of harsh chemicals which can be nasty. You'll be surprised at what you can accomplish with simple things you already have around the house.

  • White vinegar: This stuff is magic! It's great for cleaning windows, mirrors, and even some stubborn stains.
  • Baking soda: An amazing abrasive cleaner, perfect for scrubbing. It's also great for deodorizing, for instance sprinkling it on carpets and leaving it for a while before vacuuming
  • Lemon juice: Adds a fresh scent and can help with cutting grease. Plus, it's natural, unlike those overly perfumed cleaning sprays!
  • Microfiber cloths: Ditch the paper towels! Microfiber cloths are reusable, more effective, and environmentally friendly.

Tackle One Area at a Time

I know it is tempting to want to tackle every corner of your home at once. But trying to do it all will likely leave you exhausted and discouraged, especially when you are on a budget. Choose one area to focus on at a time. This could be a closet, a shelf, or even just a drawer. Do it one room at a time. Remember: little and often! If it takes three weekends, then fine. I found that focusing my efforts made the whole process way less overwhelming. You'll feel a huge sense of accomplishment after each room is tidy and clean!

Make it Fun!

Put on some upbeat music, pop open a fizzy drink and make it fun! Invite a friend over to help. Spring cleaning doesn't have to be a solo mission. Getting a friend to help can make it so much more efficient. Plus, it is a way to get a catch up, have some laughs, and have some company. Think of it as a party with a cleaning purpose!

Don't Forget the Little Things!

Those little details are so important and it is important not to forget them! Sometimes, it's the little things that make the biggest difference. Wash your windows, clean your light fixtures (those things get really grimy!), and don't forget to vacuum or mop your floors. Clean your curtains as well. Spring cleaning should refresh your entire home!

Reward Yourself!

Once you’ve completed your spring cleaning project, you've earned a big reward. Treat yourself! It could be a bubble bath, some time for self care, watching a movie, or anything else that brings you joy! You deserve it.
