My First Triumph: A Love Story

Okay, so maybe it wasn't love at first sight. My first Triumph experience wasn't exactly a fairytale. It was a borrowed Bonneville, a slightly rusty beauty, that my brother let me 'borrow' (read: 'borrowed without asking'). I'll admit, I was a little intimidated. It felt BIG, powerful, and frankly, a little scary. But after a shaky start and a few near-misses with some parked cars (don't judge!), something clicked. The rumble of the engine, the feeling of the wind in my hair (or face, mostly face), the sheer exhilaration...it was magic. That's when I knew. I had to have a Triumph.

This blog is all about getting you started on your own Triumph journey. Whether you're a seasoned rider or brand new to two wheels, this guide is for you!

Triumph Motorcycles: A Quick History Lesson

Before we get to the nitty-gritty of choosing your first Triumph, let's do a quick history lesson, shall we? The Triumph Motorcycle Company, founded way back in 1885, has a rich and, honestly, kinda dramatic history. They've seen ups and downs, bankruptcies and triumphant comebacks (pun intended!). But through it all, they've maintained their reputation for crafting beautiful, powerful motorcycles. From the legendary speed records of their early models to the modern classics we see today, Triumph's legacy is undeniable. And they really are stunning pieces of engineering, aren't they?

Picking Your First Triumph: Modern Classics vs. Retro

So, you're ready to dive in. Fantastic! Now comes the exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) part: choosing your bike. Triumph offers a ton of models, but for beginners, two main categories usually stand out: modern classics and more retro models.

  • Modern Classics: Think sleek lines, comfortable riding positions, and all the modern tech you could want (ABS, traction control, the whole shebang). These bikes are perfect if you want a blend of style and modern practicality. I own a Thruxton 1200 R and I love it. It's pure style and power!
  • Retro Models: These are the bikes that make you feel like you've stepped back in time. They're more stripped-down, more raw, and offer a more classic riding experience. But don't let that fool you - they can still pack a punch.

The best choice really depends on your personal preferences and riding style. Do some research, read reviews (and maybe even test ride a couple of models if you can)!

Beyond the Model: Things To Consider

Choosing a model is just the first step, though! Here are a few other important things to think about:

  • Your Height and Build: Make sure the bike fits you comfortably. You don't want to feel cramped or stretched out. Many dealerships let you sit on different models so you can get a feel for this.
  • Your Riding Experience: Are you a complete newbie? A seasoned pro? Starting with a less powerful model might be a good idea if you're just starting out.
  • Your Budget: Triumph motorcycles range widely in price. Know your limits and stick to them! You don't want to have buyer's remorse after purchase.
  • Maintenance and Insurance: Motorcycles require regular maintenance, and insurance costs vary depending on the model and your location. Factor these costs into your overall budget. I almost forgot about that part when I bought my first bike!

Getting Started: Gear Up and Stay Safe

This should probably go without saying, but safety first! Never ride without proper gear. A good helmet is essential, but you'll also want riding boots, gloves, and protective jacket. Don't skimp on quality gear; it might just save your life! Take a motorcycle safety course—I'm telling you, it's worth it. I nearly wrecked my brother's Bonneville on my first ride before taking a safety course. I now know how dangerous it is to be unprepared!

Triumph Community: Join the Ride!

One of the best things about owning a Triumph isn't just the bike itself—it's the community. Triumph riders are passionate, knowledgeable, and supportive. Find your local Triumph owners group and get involved. There's no better way to learn, share your experience, and maybe even make some new friends along the way.
