I'll be honest, I'm a bit of a scaredy-cat when it comes to horror movies. But there's a strange thrill, a morbid fascination, in watching something that genuinely creeps me out. So, when I say these 10 horror movies will keep you up at night, I mean it from the depths of my slightly-traumatized soul. Let's dive in, shall we? (But maybe lock your doors first... just in case.)

1. The Exorcist (1973)

This isn't just a scary movie; it's a cultural phenomenon. The sheer unsettling nature of Regan's possession... I mean, the pea soup scene alone is enough to give you nightmares for weeks. Seriously, it's iconic, terrifying, and a perfect example of psychological horror that digs its claws deep under your skin and won't let go.

2. The Shining (1980)

Kubrick's masterpiece. The twins in the hallway. 'Here's Johnny!' Need I say more? This movie is a slow burn, a masterful build-up of suspense, leaving you feeling trapped and claustrophobic, long after the credits roll. I swear, I still avoid staying in hotels with long, empty corridors. The imagery is absolutely unforgettable...and unnerving.

3. Hereditary (2018)

Prepare for some serious family drama...with a demonic twist. Hereditary is not for the faint of heart. It's a psychological thriller that burrows into your anxieties, exploring grief and trauma in a way that's both shocking and deeply unsettling. I'm still trying to erase some of those disturbing images from my memory. Let me just say... the goat...

4. The Ring (2002)

This movie is a masterclass in dread. The slow burn, the mystery, the unsettling mystery surrounding Samara's curse... it all creates an atmosphere of constant unease. The suspense? Unbearable. And that cursed video tape? Don't even get me started. You'll definitely be checking your reflection after this one... and maybe sleeping with the lights on.

5. Sinister (2012)

Found footage can be hit or miss, but Sinister gets it right. The use of home movies to reveal the chilling history of a seemingly normal family is genius. The slow reveal of the horror, the eerie atmosphere... it's truly terrifying. And that creepy Bughuul? Ugh. I had trouble sleeping for days after seeing this one. So. Much. Creepy.

6. The Babadook (2014)

This is more than just a monster movie. It's a powerful allegory for dealing with trauma and grief. The Babadook itself is truly terrifying, but the emotional core of the story is what elevates it. Be prepared to confront some disturbing truths about dealing with the monsters both inside and outside of yourself. I really needed a hug after this one.

7. It Follows (2014)

This movie plays with your deepest fears about mortality and vulnerability. The relentless nature of the entity that's stalking the main character is truly terrifying. It's the constant dread, the uncertainty, the feeling that something is always right behind you... it's unnerving and unforgettable. I was checking my mirrors... constantly.

8. The Conjuring (2013)

Based on a true story (or so they say!), The Conjuring is a masterclass in building suspense. From the unsettling sounds in the house to the terrifying presence of the demonic entity, this movie never lets up. The film plays on classic horror tropes but does it in a way that feels fresh and genuinely scary. It's a fantastic example of jump scares done right... not overdone.

9. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Freddy Krueger. Need I say more? This movie gave an entire generation nightmares. The creativity of the kills, the suspense, and the disturbing nature of Freddy himself... He's an iconic horror villain for a reason. This classic is a must-see for any horror fan. I'm still a little wary of long, dark hallways... And gloves.

Blending elements of horror and thriller, this film takes you to a disturbing realm of the supernatural. The film explores themes of family and love while simultaneously showcasing some truly horrific and disturbing imagery. The use of sound, subtle scares and the chilling visuals is masterfully executed. It’s another one that will stick with you long after the credits roll. What's lurking in your house, exactly?
