Let me tell you a story. It starts, as many great stories do, with a disaster. I’d just finished renovating my kitchen—a project that stretched my budget and my sanity. I’d poured over magazines, Pinterest, and countless design blogs, dreaming of sleek countertops and minimalist cabinets. The result? A beautiful, sterile, and utterly unme space. It looked like something out of a magazine, but it felt cold, impersonal, and frankly, depressing. It lacked soul. That's when it hit me: successful interior design isn't about copying trends; it's about creating a space that truly reflects you. It's about personalization.

We’re bombarded with images of ‘perfect’ interiors—all clean lines, neutral palettes, and curated accessories. But what if ‘perfect’ feels bland? What if your ideal space involves a splash of color, some quirky vintage finds, and a comfortable, lived-in feel? The key is to move past generic ideas and embrace your own unique style. Think about what makes you feel comfortable and happy. Do you love bold patterns? Are you drawn to natural materials? What memories, objects or styles do you want to express? Start with a mood board—collect images, fabric swatches, and anything that inspires you. Don't overthink it; just let your intuition guide you. This is your space, your rules!

Personalization goes far beyond choosing the right paint color. It's about incorporating elements that tell your story. Think about family heirlooms, travel souvenirs, artwork created by loved ones, or items that represent your passions. These things add character, warmth, and a sense of history to a space. They're conversation starters, memories waiting to be relived, and elements that can transform a room from a house into a home. One of my favorite things to do is showcase local artists' work – it gives the room an authentic and personal touch while supporting local talent!

It's easy to get caught up in aesthetics, but don't neglect the practical aspects. Your design should be beautiful, but it should also be functional and suited to your lifestyle. Do you need extra storage? Do you love to cook and entertain? Do you work from home? Consider the way you actually use the space and plan your design accordingly. A beautifully decorated but impractical room is ultimately just a wasted space. For example, I recently designed a home office for a client who works with lots of physical documents. We designed custom shelving to maximize storage capacity, making the space both functional and beautiful.

Think about how you feel when you enter a space that reflects your personality. It should feel inviting, calming, and inspiring. A personalized interior creates an environment that supports your well-being. It’s a sanctuary, a place where you feel comfortable and relaxed and you should be proud of your accomplishment. It reduces stress, promotes creativity, and enhances your overall mood. I personally find myself spending a lot more time at home now that I’ve created the space that truly feels like me. It's my happy place!

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the design process, consider working with an interior designer. A good designer will act as a collaborator, helping you define your style and translate your vision into reality. However, it's crucial to find a designer whose style and approach aligns with your own. Don’t just go with the first name you see; interview several designers to find the right fit. Look for someone who listens attentively, understands your needs, and shares your passion for creating a unique and personalized space.
