A Personal Confession: I'm a Scaredy-Cat (But I Love Horror!)So, here's the thing. I'm a massive wimp. Seriously. Jump scares? I practically leap out of my skin. Creepy crawlies? Forget about it. But… I love survival horror games. There's something about that thrilling mix of terror and triumph that keeps me coming back for more. I've spent countless nights clutching my controller, heart pounding, screaming at the screen… yet somehow, I keep playing. And I know I'm not alone. That's why I wanted to share my top 5 PlayStation 5 survival horror games that'll make you scream—but also maybe, just maybe, want to play them again. (Don't judge my questionable life choices.)
1. Resident Evil Village: Where Gothic Horror Meets Family DramaOkay, listen, I know what you're thinking: "Resident Evil Village? Again?" But hear me out! While Resident Evil 7 was great (and terrifying—I still have nightmares about those creepy dolls), Village refined the formula. The atmosphere is thick with dread, the setting is beautifully creepy, and the story? It's wild. Seriously. There's lycans, a creepy doll-like thing, weird mutated people—oh, and Lady Dimitrescu. Let's just say you don't want to cross her, although, you know, I'd be really nervous if I ever had to. Think of it as if Dracula became a mommy blogger. It's unexpectedly brilliant. The gameplay's improved too, with more weapon options and a better balance of action and suspense. Oh, and the graphics? Stunning. Prepare to be both horrified and impressed.

2. The Callisto Protocol: A Visceral Descent into Space HorrorIf you're a fan of Dead Space, you absolutely need to play The Callisto Protocol. It's a spiritual successor, and it captures that same grim, gory atmosphere perfectly. I mean, this game isn't for the faint of heart. We're talking some seriously disturbing creature design and some graphic violence. It's all very bleak, very grimy and really makes you uncomfortable. I had to play through it in chunks! Seriously, there were times when I had to put the controller down and take a break—mostly from the constant tension! The melee combat is brutal but satisfying, and the level design keeps you on the edge of your seat. I'm already looking forward to a sequel if the game is successful. Just, you know, maybe with a little less intense moments. Maybe…

3. Dead Space Remake: A Classic ReimaginedI know, I know, another remake. But trust me on this. The Dead Space Remake isn't just a graphical upgrade—it's a complete overhaul. The tension is amplified, the story is enriched, and the gameplay is smoother than ever. Seriously, this is how you do a remake. I played this at a friend's house and I had to make sure to not make any noise since I did not want to bother her during her gaming experience. They did such a fantastic job with the atmosphere and sound effects, I practically jumped out of my seat. Even my friend, a seasoned horror veteran, jumped at times. You'll be frantically scanning your surroundings for any sign of those horrifying Necromorphs, and the feeling of helplessness is palpable—which is, I admit, quite terrifying! Even after my experience, I am still afraid that some of the sounds will pop up again.

4. Silent Hill 2 Remake: A Psychological MasterpieceOkay, full disclosure: I haven't actually played the Silent Hill 2 Remake yet (it's on my list!), but based on everything I've seen and heard, it's a must-have for any survival horror fan. The original is a masterpiece of psychological horror, and early reviews suggest this remake keeps the soul of the game while updating the graphics and gameplay. The atmosphere is legendary for its dark and twisted world. The psychological horror elements are intense. This will definitely make you uncomfortable playing through this game, but it is a must-have for any survival horror fan. Just prepare yourself for a truly disturbing experience.

5. Returnal: Rogue-lite Horror with a Sci-Fi TwistOkay, this one's a bit different. Returnal isn't your typical survival horror game, but it has enough creepy elements to make the list. The game's rogue-lite structure (meaning you'll die a lot!) adds a unique layer of tension. Each playthrough feels like a new nightmare! The environments are beautifully bizarre and unsettling, and the cosmic horror elements are genuinely disturbing. Seriously, some of those enemies are straight out of a Lovecraftian nightmare. And it's challenging. I mean, really challenging. Be prepared to die, learn from your mistakes, and try again. But the cycle of death and rebirth is part of what makes Returnal so compelling. It is a unique and engaging game. I'd definitely recommend this to someone who likes a challenge.

So, Are You Brave Enough? Those are my top 5 picks for PlayStation 5 survival horror games as of March 7th, 2025. Some are classic remakes, others are brand-new experiences. But they all share one thing in common: they'll scare the living daylights out of you. But in the best possible way, obviosuly. What are you waiting for? Go grab your controller and get ready for a night of screams—and maybe a few sleepless nights afterwards. Don't forget to tell me which ones you tried and let me know how terrifying they were! (or weren't)
The best horror isn't about jump scares; it's about creating a feeling of dread that lingers long after the game is over.
