Okay, so picture this: me, 18 years old, overflowing with excitement (and slightly terrifying anxiety) about starting college. Dorm life seemed like a glamorous adventure, all late-night study sessions and spontaneous friendship explosions. Reality? It was a chaotic mess. My tiny dorm room resembled a disaster zone—clothes everywhere, textbooks piled haphazardly, and enough empty coffee cups to build a small castle. I was drowning in papers, assignments, and the sheer overwhelm of it all. The stress was REAL. It wasn't pretty, let's just say. Sound familiar? Yeah, me too.
This post is for all you stylish but disorganized souls (and anyone who's ever spent more time hunting for their keys than actually doing homework. Been there, done that, got the overflowing laundry hamper to prove it!). I'm sharing my top five tips for creating a functional AND gorgeous minimalist dorm—because you deserve to thrive, not just survive, your first year.

Before you even THINK about decorating, declutter. Seriously, this is the foundational step. Go through EVERYTHING. I mean everything. Get rid of clothes you haven’t worn in a year. Those textbooks from high school? Bye, Felicia! Donate, sell, or toss whatever doesn't spark joy (or serve a purpose). Trust me, having less stuff leads to less stress, a cleaner room and more space for the good stuff - like awesome study sessions and maybe some well-deserved pizza nights. Don't be shy - get rid of anything!

Okay, you've purged. Now what? You'll need storage solutions that work with your dorm's size, your budget, and your style. Under-bed storage containers are a lifesaver (literally!). Shelves, drawer organizers, and even over-the-door organizers are amazing. My secret weapon was a cute little rolling cart for extra storage that I could roll around! I would say that is a MUST! I found mine at Target and it was super affordable, too. This is a game changer, so you should really try to add this to your dorm room!
Pro-Tip: Go vertical! Think stackable storage bins, wall-mounted shelves, and even hanging organizers to maximize your space. It's all about creativity and efficiency!
Remember, storage doesn't have to be boring. Look for cute baskets, stylish bins, and decorative boxes that match your aesthetic. What's important is what makes you happy and your space organized!

Dorm rooms are notoriously small. So, embrace furniture that can do double duty. A storage ottoman can serve as both seating and a place to stash blankets and extra pillows, and an under-bed storage container can become your new closet! A bed with storage underneath is amazing! It really helps when you're in such a small space. I found this amazing bed frame from Amazon, which was perfect for my small room.

Too much visual clutter can make your dorm feel cramped and overwhelming. A cohesive color palette (three or four colors, maximum!) creates a sense of calm and order. It doesn't have to be boring. Choose colors you love! It is important to make your space feel like home! I opted for a palette of soft neutrals, with pops of color from my bedding and some cute accent pillows.
Pro-Tip: Stick to neutral bedding. It makes it super easy to match it with your own style. You can always switch around your room by changing small things up, like pillows or blankets.

Let's be realistic. Dorm rooms are not always pristine. But having some basic cleaning supplies within reach will be a life saver. A little bit of tidying each day prevents chaos from completely taking over. I used to keep a small trash can underneath my desk. I am sure you will find that you do too!
