A Little About Me and My Skin

Hey there, lovely people! Dr. Evelyn Reed here, and I'm super excited to chat with you today about something near and dear to my heart – skincare! I've spent years studying the science behind it, but I’ve also learned a thing or two from trial and error (oh, those teenage years!). Today, we're focusing on seasonal skincare routines for normal skin. I have normal skin myself (well, mostly…more on that later), and even I need to adjust my routine with the seasons. This post is for you if you're like me and feel like you're always playing catch-up with your skin's changing needs.

This isn’t some fancy, complicated routine. Think of this as a helpful guide to help you feel more confident, and your skin healthier, no matter the season. Ready? Let's dive in!

Spring Awakening: Hello Hydration!

Spring is here, and that means shedding those winter layers... both clothing and skincare! After the harshness of winter, my skin tends to be a little dehydrated. So, I typically ditch the heavier creams and switch to lighter, more hydrating products. It is important that you focus on hydration throughout the entire year, but especially so during the warmer months.

  • Look for: Lightweight moisturizers with hyaluronic acid (a moisture magnet!), and maybe even incorporate a hydrating serum into your routine.
  • What I use: I'm currently loving CeraVe's AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30 for daytime and at night I use The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. You’ll want to select products that are right for you and your skin tone, though!
  • Pro tip: Don't forget your SPF, which is crucial, even on cloudy days. Spring’s sunshine is deceiving and can damage skin as easily as the summer sun.

Summer Glow: Protecting Your Skin

Summer is all about fun in the sun, but it's also prime time for sun damage. I'm all about basking in the sun, but responsible sun protection is always important! My normal skin gets a little oilier in the summer, so I usually reach for a lighter moisturizer (or even a gel moisturizer).

  • My Must-Haves: A high-SPF sunscreen (at least 30 SPF) is a non-negotiable. A good sun hat and sunglasses for additional protection aren’t a bad idea, either!
  • Consider: Look for water-resistant sunscreens if you're spending time swimming or sweating. Also, don't forget to reapply your sunscreen every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating a lot.
  • Remember: Sun damage is cumulative, meaning that every little bit of sun exposure adds up over time, increasing the risk of skin cancer. It’s crucial that you protect your skin!

Autumn Embrace: Gentle Exfoliation

As summer fades and the temperatures drop, my skin starts to feel drier again. But before switching to heavier moisturizers, I love to incorporate gentle exfoliation into my routine. This helps remove dead skin cells and prevents clogged pores, leaving my skin feeling fresh and smooth. I typically do this once or twice a week.

  • My method: I prefer a gentle chemical exfoliant with AHAs or BHAs, rather than a harsh physical scrub. I also find that an exfoliating face wash a couple of times a week does the trick!
  • Important note: Always follow your exfoliation with a moisturizing product to avoid irritating your skin. Listen to your skin: if it starts feeling irritated or sensitive, stop and give your skin a break.
  • Bonus tip: If you're finding that your skin is flaking more in the autumn months, you might need to adjust your moisturizers!

Winter Wonderland: Intense Hydration

Winter is the time when my normal skin needs the most attention. The cold, dry air really strips my skin of moisture, so I rely on rich, hydrating creams and oils. I also love to use a humidifier in my bedroom at night to add moisture to the air. It makes a huge difference.

  • Must have: Look for moisturizers that contain ingredients like ceramides, shea butter, or jojoba oil, or other similar natural moisturizers that work well for your skin.
  • Hydrate from within: Drinking plenty of water is also crucial for keeping your skin hydrated. I’ve noticed a massive difference in my skin and overall health since I increased my water intake.
  • Listen to your skin: If your skin feels tight or itchy, it's a sign that it needs more moisture.
