Kia ora from New Zealand! So, last September, I decided on a whim to ditch the usual summer holiday chaos and explore New Zealand during its shoulder season—Autumn. I figured fewer crowds, crisper air, and maybe even some better deals? Turns out, I was right! This blog post is all about that off-season adventure, hiking amidst stunning landscapes, and discovering hidden gems. I'm telling you, New Zealand in autumn is pretty magical. Think vibrant foliage, fewer tourists, and affordable accommodations. Sounds good, right?

Hiking the Great Walks (and Lesser-Known Trails!)

I started my trip with one of New Zealand's Great Walks—the Milford Track. Seriously, stunning. But, I will be honest, it was challenging! I mean, I'm not exactly a fitness guru, so I needed to do some serious planning and training beforehand. So, if you plan to tackle it make sure you are prepared physically. It's well worth it, though. The scenery is utterly breathtaking; those fjords, towering mountains, the lush forests—pure magic! But don't forget the smaller tracks! I found some incredible day hikes that were less crowded and just as beautiful. One I loved was the Routeburn Track – less known but equally spectacular. So, if you are looking for an unforgettable adventure, then this is it!

Beyond the Hiking Boots: Foodie Delights and Cozy Lodges

Okay, so I love a good hike as much as the next person but let's be honest, no adventure is complete without delicious food and cozy accommodations. One of the coolest things I found is that New Zealand has awesome local cuisine—fresh seafood, lamb, unique cheeses, and the most amazing craft beer. I indulged a fair bit. I also loved discovering the charming accommodation options, from rustic lodges to eco-friendly cabins. One night, I even stayed in a lodge with a roaring fireplace—pure bliss! The best places were those little off-the-beaten-path spots. It's amazing how much you can find if you venture away from the main tourist tracks. So, book in advance and make sure to experience that authentic kiwi hospitality.

Off the Beaten Track: Hidden Gems and Unexpected Adventures

New Zealand offers so much more than just the iconic tourist spots. So, you must ditch the busy spots and do some exploring! I found some incredible hidden gems – secret waterfalls, quirky little towns, and stunning coastal drives. One day, I stumbled upon a charming little town with beautiful beaches and a thriving art scene. And another time, I discovered a stunning waterfall that I hardly saw anyone at. Truly magical! These unexpected adventures made my trip even more special. You know, the beauty of off-season travel is that you can find those amazing spots without the stress and crowds.

Planning Your Off-Season Adventure: Tips and Tricks

Thinking about planning your own off-season adventure? Here are a few tips from someone who's been there:

  • Book accommodations and tours in advance: While it's less crowded, some popular spots still book up quickly.
  • Pack for all types of weather: The weather in New Zealand can change in an instant. So, pack layers and be prepared for anything.
  • Rent a car: It's the best way to explore the country at your own pace and discover hidden gems. But be prepared for some winding roads.
  • Be prepared for some rain! New Zealand gets its fair share of rain, so pack accordingly.
  • Embrace the unexpected: Things don't always go according to plan when you are travelling, so be flexible and go with the flow. And it might be cold, so pack warm clothes!

So, there you have it! My autumn adventure in New Zealand was truly unforgettable. If you're looking for a unique and rewarding travel experience, I highly recommend visiting during the off-season. It was truly amazing.
