5 easy ways to reduce stress

By Eleanor Vance

Feeling overwhelmed? Like you're juggling chainsaws while riding a unicycle? Yeah, me too, sometimes. Life can get crazy, right? But recently, I've been focusing on simple ways to de-stress, and I wanted to share my top five. These aren't magic bullets, but they've made a real difference for me, and I hope they'll help you too. So grab a cuppa, settle in, and let's dive in!

1. Breathe Deep, My Friend: The Power of Mindful Breathing

Okay, I know, I know. 'Just breathe' sounds so cliché. But hear me out. We're constantly bombarded with stimuli—emails, notifications, endless to-do lists. Our nervous systems are perpetually on high alert. Mindful breathing is like hitting the 'pause' button. It's about consciously focusing on your breath—the inhale, the exhale—and letting go of the mental clutter. Even five minutes of focused breathing can make a world of difference. There are tons of guided meditations on apps like Calm or Headspace. If apps aren't your thing, just find a quiet space, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Seriously, try it. I started doing this when I was going through a really rough patch, and it helped ground me during those stressful periods.

2. Move Your Body: Exercise Isn't Just for Gym Rats

I used to think exercise was only for people who could run marathons or lift crazy heavy weights. But guess what? It's for everyone! And it doesn't have to involve grueling workouts. A brisk walk in the park, a bike ride, even dancing in your living room—anything that gets your body moving will release endorphins and help reduce stress. Plus, it's a fantastic way to clear your head. I recently started taking Zumba classes (yes, really!), and it's so much fun and super effective for stress relief. Find something you enjoy and make it a part of your routine. You don't have to become a fitness guru overnight; even small steps are valuable.

3. Unplug and Recharge: Digital Detox Time

We're constantly connected—phones, laptops, tablets. It's amazing, but it's also exhausting. Our brains are constantly processing information, and this constant stimulation is draining. So, schedule regular digital detox time. Turn off your notifications, put away your phone, and engage in activities that don't involve screens. Read a book, listen to music, spend time in nature. Disconnect to reconnect with yourself and reduce stress. I aim for at least an hour each evening, and wow, it makes a huge difference! You might be surprised at how much calmer you feel.

4. Connect with Others: The Power of Human Connection

Humans are social creatures. We need connection. When we're stressed, it's easy to isolate ourselves. But connecting with loved ones—friends, family, even pets—can provide a sense of support and reduce stress. Talk to someone, share your feelings, or simply enjoy their company. Even a quick chat with a friend can help lift your spirits. I've been making a conscious effort to connect with friends and family more often. What about you? Try it, and you may discover the incredible benefit.

5. Prioritize Self-Care: It's Not Selfish, It's Essential

Self-care isn't about bubble baths and face masks (although those are nice!). It's about doing things that nourish your mind, body, and soul. What makes you feel good? Is it reading, listening to music, spending time in nature, practicing yoga or meditation? Whatever it is, make it a priority. Schedule time for self-care, just like you would for any other important appointment. It's not selfish; it's essential for your well-being. I've recently started incorporating short meditation sessions and journaling into my daily routine, and the impact it has on my stress levels is huge! You should too! What will be your self-care ritual?

Remember, stress is a part of life. The goal isn't to eliminate it entirely but to develop healthy coping mechanisms. Start small, be patient with yourself, and celebrate your progress along the way. You got this!
