My Kitchen Chaos (and How I Fixed It)

Let's be real: my kitchen wasn't always this organized, Zen-like space you see in the magazines. For years, it was a disaster—pots and pans piled high, spices scattered everywhere, and enough crumbs to feed a small family of mice. Sound familiar? It was really stressing me out, and even the simplest of tasks—like making a cup of coffee—felt like a monumental chore. So, I decided to take control. This blog post is the result of my kitchen organization journey—and it's going to help you conquer your kitchen clutter, too!

  1. Purge the Clutter: A Ruthless Declutter

The road to a clutter-free kitchen starts with brutal honesty. I mean, BRUTAL. I went through every drawer, shelf, and cupboard. Anything that I had not used in over a year? Gone! Duplicates? Bye-bye! Broken gadgets? Trashed! This was harder than I thought it would be. There were a few sentimental things that I just couldn't part with, but honestly, if you haven't used something in a year, you probably will not miss it. Trust me on that one! You will feel so much lighter once it's gone. Consider donating reusable items to charity. It's a win-win!

2. Maximize Vertical Space: Shelves are Your Friends!

Now that you have purged, you can optimize your vertical space. Think shelves beyond the obvious. I took stackable organizers for my canned goods in the pantry and then added small shelving units inside my cupboards to hold my spices and oils. Think creativity! I even used the otherwise dead space under the sink and bought a multitiered organizer for cleaning supplies. What a lot of space saved! What about your kitchen? How to maximize the space there?

  1. Clear Countertop Chaos: Less is More

I used to have EVERYTHING on my countertops. It drove me nuts! Now, I keep only the essentials out: a coffee maker, a pretty fruit bowl, and maybe a cute cutting board. Everything else goes away. This makes your kitchen feel significantly less claustrophobic and makes it so much easier to clean. It is amazing how much of a difference a clean counter makes to the overall appearance of your kitchen! That does sound quite harsh, but it's easier than you think.

  1. Drawer Dividers: A Game Changer!

The Utensil drawers are probably the most common culprits of kitchen clutter. I bought some cheap drawer dividers off Amazon, and it was literally life-changing. They helped keep all the utensils in order, making it easy to find what I need without looking through a messy drawer. No more digging around in a messy drawer! This was actually pretty cheap and pretty darn effective. I even added dividers to my junk drawer!

5. Spice Rack Organization: A Pinch of Order

The other major sore point was spices. I replaced my mismatched old spice jars with a uniform set. Now, everything is properly labeled, and my spice rack looks so professional. Plus, it's so easy to find the spice I need now! This one little change made a big difference in how put-together my kitchen felt. This step really is quite surprisingly inexpensive and easy to do. Give it a try!

6. Labeling is Key: Know What You Have

I know this sounds basic, but labeling—what's in leftovers containers and staples in your pantry—makes everything easier. It not only keeps track of what you have but prevents food wastage and will easily let you identify what you might need to locate while cooking. This saves a lot more time than you can imagine. Which one are you going to be able to label today?

7. Invest in Good Storage: The Right Tools

Investing in good storage containers and organizers really pays off in the long run. It can make quite a difference in the general appearance and functionality of your kitchen. I upgraded to matching containers for my dry goods and used glass jars to store my pasta and rice. Pretty nice-looking, and you can easily find what you want!

8. Regular Cleaning: Keep it up!

Keeping the kitchen clean is a big part of keeping it organized. I try to do a quick wipe-down of my countertops and sink every night and do a deeper clean once a week. This keeps clutter at bay and your kitchen looking its best. Five minutes of cleaning may not seem like much, but it makes a huge difference! I never used to do this step, but it really helps!

9. Make it a Habit: Consistency is Key

The key to keeping the kitchen clutter-free is consistency. Try to make it a habit of putting things back in their place after use, and take a few minutes each day to tidy up. This just takes a little bit of effort to keep your kitchen looking great all the time. It, therefore, means more time cooking and enjoying your space!

10. Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help

If you're feeling overwhelmed, don't hesitate to ask for help! Maybe a friend can help you declutter, or you can hire a professional organizer. There is no shame at all in admitting that you could use a little extra support—because it will get done!
