Let me tell you a story. Last St. Patrick's Day, I stumbled upon a stout so unbelievably good, it sent shivers down my spine (in a good way!). It was dark, rich, creamy…a revelation. That, my friends, is the kind of stout I'm always chasing. And this year, I think I found it. Or at least, a strong contender for the best stout of 2025. So grab your favorite glass—we're diving deep into a tasting experience.

The Contender: 'Midnight Bloom' by Black Kettle Brewery

Forget what you think you know about stouts. This isn't your grandpappy's Guinness (though, no disrespect to grandpappy). Black Kettle's 'Midnight Bloom' boasts an intensely complex flavor profile. First sip? A wave of roasted cocoa hits you, followed by a subtle hint of dark fruit –think blackberry and plum. There's a creamy texture that's almost unbelievable; it's like drinking liquid velvet. Seriously, I've tried many stouts, but this one just sits on the tongue so elegantly. It's hard to describe accurately; you need to experience it yourself. And the aroma? Oh boy, the aroma! Think rich coffee beans, dark chocolate, and a hint of something...floral? It’s oddly captivating.

But it’s not just about the taste. The presentation matters, too. The beer is housed in a sleek, black can—very sophisticated. The label is simple yet elegant, not trying too hard. It's a quiet confidence that speaks volumes about the beer inside. The color? A deep, midnight black. Absolutely gorgeous. I usually drink from a pint glass, but for something like this, a snifter enhances the experience, allowing the aromatics to truly blossom.

What Makes It Stand Out?

So many stouts taste the same—generic, flat, and boring. 'Midnight Bloom' is anything but. The brewer clearly put a lot of thought and love into this brew. The balance between bitterness and sweetness is absolutely perfect—not too sweet, not overly bitter. The body is full, but not heavy. It’s just...perfectly balanced, like a fine wine. (Okay, maybe not quite as nuanced as fine wine, but you get the idea.)

Also, the subtle floral notes? That's unusual, and it’s a delightful twist on a classic. They use a unique hop variety I've never encountered before. I was told it’s a carefully guarded secret, but trust me, you taste the artistry here. Plus, this beer is just very sessionable. I found myself happily sipping it all evening long. Not at once, of course. That would have been irresponsible.

The Verdict: Is It the Best?

Now, declaring the absolute best stout is a bold claim. I'm not gonna lie, I've been known to have a few too many brews on a night out (or two). But after numerous tastings, 'Midnight Bloom' certainly ranks near the top. It's a beautifully crafted, intensely flavorful, and deeply satisfying stout that deserves all the accolades. It's impressive on its own. If they made it in a larger format, I’d be tempted to stock up. But they didn’t, so I’ll just have to keep going back for more.

Is it perfect? Maybe not. (I mean, are we talking perfect or are we talking slightly too fizzy?). But it's close enough to perfection for me to happily proclaim it my top choice for this year. What do you think? Let me know in the comments what your favorite stout is –maybe I'll give it a try!

Where to Find It (and Other Recommendations)

'Midnight Bloom' is currently only available at Black Kettle Brewery and a handful of select bars. Check their website for locations and availability. It’s worth the hunt, trust me. I know this beer isn’t exactly the easiest to find, but trust me; it is worth it. I even drove an hour, just to get my hands on some!

If you can't find 'Midnight Bloom,' here are a few other stouts you might enjoy:

  • Founders Breakfast Stout: A classic for a reason.
  • Guinness Draught: A timeless staple.
  • Deschutes Obsidian Stout: A rich and roasty option.

Don't be afraid to experiment! The world of stout is vast and wonderful.
