So, you're dreaming of globe-trotting adventures? Awesome! But let's be real, those cobblestone streets and jungle trails aren't exactly kind to your feet. Before I embarked on my year-long backpacking trip through Southeast Asia (yes, it was as amazing as it sounds!), I spent way too long searching for the perfect travel shoes. I mean, blisters are the absolute worst travel companion, right? That's why I'm sharing my top picks – the 15 best shoes for traveling the world, tested and approved (mostly!).

1. The Classic Sneaker: Adidas Stan Smiths

These are a true staple – stylish, comfortable, and surprisingly durable. I wore mine for weeks straight in Marrakech and they still look (almost) brand new. Plus, they're easy to clean – a major plus when you're dealing with unpredictable weather. But be warned, they're not the best for intense hiking.

2. The Supportive Walking Shoe: Brooks Ghost 15

Trust me, your feet will thank you after a long day of sightseeing. These are seriously plush and offer excellent support. Perfect for city walks and exploring new towns. My friend, Sarah, swears by these for her marathon training; I haven't gone that far, but they are fantastic for sightseeing!

3. The Lightweight Hiking Boot: Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX

For those mountain hikes and off-the-beaten-path adventures, these are your go-to. They offer great ankle support and have excellent grip on uneven terrain. They're slightly heavier than sneakers, so maybe not ideal for all-day city wear, but worth it for those epic hikes. Remember that one time I almost rolled my ankle in the Swiss Alps? Yeah, these boots saved me!

4. The Versatile Sandal: Teva Hurricane XLT 2

Super comfortable, quick-drying, and surprisingly supportive, these sandals are great for warm climates. I wore mine everywhere – from exploring ancient temples to relaxing on the beach. Just maybe avoid wearing them in super-cold climates.

5. The Stylish Loafer: Rothy's Loafers

Okay, I admit, these aren't the most practical for intense trekking, but they're perfect for nights out and adding a touch of chic to your travel wardrobe. They're also surprisingly comfortable for shorter walks. They are easily washable which is a lifesaver in terms of packing light, too!

6. The Packable Ballet Flat: Tieks Ballet Flats

These fold up tiny, making them perfect for packing light. They're comfy for shorter walks and look great with dresses or skirts. However, they're not ideal for serious walking or hiking. Also, maybe avoid wearing them while attempting to climb a volcano; it didn't go so well for me, haha.

7. The Comfortable Boot: Dr. Martens 1460

These iconic boots are surprisingly comfortable for all-day wear (once you break them in, of course!). They're durable, stylish, and can handle a fair bit of rough and tumble. If your travels take you to colder climates, these are a fantastic option.

8. The Minimalist Sandal: OluKai Ohana Sandals

For those hot, beach days, these sandals are perfect. They're comfortable, stylish, and have great arch support. A great option for hot days, and even better when the sun sets and you want something easy to put on after a long day.

9. The Waterproof Hiking Shoe: Keen Targhee III

If you're planning on hiking in wet or muddy conditions, these are a must. They're waterproof and breathable, making them ideal for all weather conditions. Honestly, I didn't always pack these but the one time I didn't...well, I learned my lesson. Always pack these, even if the weather forecast looks good!

10. The Slip-on Sneaker: Vans Slip-On

Easy to slip on and off, these are great for airport security and quick trips. They're also super comfortable for shorter walks. But, they are not the most supportive for long walks, so consider using these only for short trips or around the hotel.

11. The Athletic Sandal: Chaco Z/Cloud X

These sandals offer great arch support and are surprisingly comfortable for walking. They're quick-drying, perfect for warmer climates, and are very durable, even for backpacking trips.

12. The Rugged Boot: Timberland White Ledge Mid Waterproof

If you're heading somewhere really rugged, these will keep your feet protected. They're waterproof, durable, and offer excellent ankle support. However, they're not the lightest option, so they might not be ideal for everyday wear.

13. The Water Shoe: NRS Quick Dry Water Shoe

For water activities, these are essential. They protect your feet from rocks and sharp objects while remaining flexible enough for swimming and snorkeling. It was a life-saver while I was white-water rafting in Costa Rica!

14. The All-Weather Boot: Blundstone Chelsea Boots

These are a stylish and practical option for colder weather, offering comfort and protection from the elements. They’re stylish, comfortable, and waterproof - a great overall shoe for traveling in colder climates.

15. The Cross-Trainer: Hoka Clifton 8

Super comfortable for all-day wear and supportive enough for light hikes or runs. These stylish cross-trainers are great if you're planning to do some physical activity while you travel.

Packing Your Shoes: Tips & Tricks

  • Pack strategically: Place heavier shoes at the bottom of your bag.
  • Use packing cubes: This will keep your shoes separated and prevent them from damaging other items.
  • Stuff socks inside your shoes: This saves space and helps maintain the shoes' shape.
  • Choose wisely: Pack only what you absolutely need. Your feet (and your luggage allowance!) will thank you for it!
